By the 1940s and early 1950s, patriotism was at an all time high as India gained independence from England. As a result, movies often included a story of struggle and ultimate hope for the future.

At this point, some movies were "realistic", with characters experiencing hardship and disappointment. But many others showed humourous aspects of reality, romance, and imagination.

Major films of this period include: "Roti", "Neecha Nagar" "Boot Polish" "Mother India" and "Barsaat".
