A break in film was evident in the 1970 and early 1980s. Two camps emerged: the big-budget, star centered films vs. the socially conscious, "art" cinema. Popular movies became more action oriented, yet maintained the musical element. Southern India, especially, created many classic commentaries on Indian society, including "Nirmalyam", "Jaadu", and "Avargal".
