The first movie in India (from France) was shown on July 7, 1896 in Mumbai.
In 1913, India created its first silent moving picture. Produced by Dadasheb Phalke, the film was called "Raja Harishchandra" and told a story from the classic epic poem "Mahabharat".
Most of the early silent films have been lost. However, judging by their rapid production (Phalke created 100!), films were already a major part of life.
